I am excited to formally announce my candidacy for Wakefield Town Treasurer this April! As a lifelong resident and Wakefield Memorial High School graduate, I am eager to give back to the community that has shaped me.

Before diving into my qualifications, I want to take a moment to explain the role of the Town Treasurer. In my initial conversation with townspeople. I’ve found that many people are unsure of the role the Town Treasurer plays.  The Treasurer’s primary responsibility is to preserve, protect, and manage the town’s financial resources. This includes overseeing the receipt, accurate accounting, and prudent investment of all Town funds. The Treasurer does not set policy or steward capital based on an agenda separate from that of Town Council.  I believe this distinction will be especially important in the weeks ahead.

As for me, I am not a career politician, nor do I have a strong interest in politics. What I am passionate about is finding a meaningful way to give back to the town that has given me so much.

Since graduating from Wakefield High School (Class of 2009) and earning a double major in Economics and Public Policy from Trinity College, I have spent my career in investment management in Boston. Currently, I am the Director of Investment Manager Research at Nixon Peabody Trust Company, a Boston-based law firm and trust company with nearly $4 billion in assets under management. In this role, I am responsible for risk budgeting and evaluating investment opportunities.

Prior to joining NPTC, I was an Investment Director at Cambridge Associates, where I worked extensively with sovereign wealth funds, municipalities, and other public entities to invest their resources responsibly.

As Wakefield continues to invest in key initiatives, including the new high school, now is the time to elect a Town Treasurer who can collaborate with Town Council and other stakeholders to maintain our AAA bond rating. This is how we ensure Wakefield’s responsible growth while safeguarding its financial future for generations to come. As someone who plans to raise a family in town, I have a personal stake in its success. I’ll be living with the results of these decisions for decades to come. There’s no better alignment than that.

I appreciate your support and look forward to engaging with you in the coming weeks!

“My family has been rooted in Wakefield since 1892, actively contributing to the community for generations. While I have no interest in politics as a career, I have always felt a deep responsibility to give back to the town that has given me so much. This drive stems from my grandfather, John McCarthy Sr., who, from the time I was a toddler, would take me around town—from Town Hall to the police and fire stations to Wally’s Cleaners—teaching me the value of community and showing me just how special Wakefield truly is. Though he is no longer with us, his vision of Wakefield as a close-knit town where neighbors support one another continues to inspire me.”
